Transportation in Portland

Portland's transport core is the MAX Light Rail, clean, cheap, and the only mode that ties downtown, the airport, and most neighborhoods together without transfers. Hop on any color line downtown. The same ticket works on the streetcar loop and the frequent bus grid, so grab a Hop Fastpass at the station kiosks and tap once, no paper slips, no daily queues. Buses fill the gaps the rails miss. But avoid the touristy "aerial tram" unless you're headed to the hospital hill; it's a splurge detour with a long uphill walk back. First-timers: the city blocks are short and bike-friendly, so a Biketown rental is often faster than waiting for a bus across the river. If you're staying central, everything from Powell's to the food-cart pods is within a 15-minute walk or a single light-rail stop, no need to rent a car and hunt for parking. From PDX, the MAX Red Line is the insider move: direct, cheap, and drops you under Pioneer Courthouse Square in about 40 minutes. Taxis and rideshares are a comfort fallback if you land after midnight. But the train runs well past most flight arrivals, check the last departure on the platform screens before you exit baggage claim.
